Simplified and Clear: NCFI’s New Geotechnical Polyurethane Formula Names

At NCFI Polyurethanes, we’re always looking for ways to make life easier for our contractors. That’s why we’ve updated the names of our geotechnical polyurethane formulas. The products you know and trust haven’t changed, but their names now make it simpler to understand what each formula does best. By highlighting key characteristics like density and reaction time, our new naming system helps you quickly find the right polyurethane for every job. Keep reading to learn why we made the change, what the new names mean, and where to find our updated Technical Data Sheets.

Why The New Name?

Each new polyurethane formula name was designed to clearly reflect its key characteristics. Our goal with this change was simple: clarity. By updating the naming system, geotechnical contractors and engineers can now identify crucial details at a glance. No more trying to remember which single or dual-component product matches a specific density or system type, the essential information is built right into the name.

Polyurethane System Name Breakdown

Each new polyurethane formula name was developed to reflect its most important characteristics at a glance. The goal was simple: make product selection clearer and faster. With this updated system, geotechnical contractors and engineers can immediately identify a formula’s density and system qualities without needing to cross-reference technical data or product charts. The essential details are built right into the name itself.
  • NCFI: North Carolina Foam Industries.
  • Density (PCF): Moving forward, the second part of each polyurethane formula name represents its density. In the example shown above, 2.8 indicates a foam density of 2.8 pounds per cubic foot (PCF).
    • Selecting the appropriate polyurethane density depends on two primary goals: increasing the load-bearing capacity of the soil or filling voids within the soil.
    • Higher-density polyurethanes are ideal when the objective is to strengthen and stabilize weak soils, as they add both weight and rigidity. Lower-density polyurethanes, on the other hand, are best suited for filling larger voids without contributing unnecessary weight.
  • System Qualities: The final letter in each new formula name represents a key system quality. Each letter and its meaning are as follows:
    • S: represents slow reacting formulas. Slower reactivity optimizes the spread of polyurethane and offers a more gradual and even expansion. There is more coverage per injection location with these products, making them ideal for filling larger areas like voids and cavities.
    • R: represents regular-speed formulas, offering a balance between gradual coverage and expansive power.
    • F: at the end of the name is to represent our fast-reacting and fast curing formulas.
    • H: Polyurethane formulas with the letter H are hydrophobic. Our hydrophobic formulas polymerize when exposed to water, making them useful for injections being performed with water present.
    • X: Represents low exotherm formulas. These formulations are made to produce less heat during expansion. This is crucial for projects where large volumes of polyurethane are used in a single consolidated area.
