Problem

At the famous Colonial Williamsburg’s golf course—owned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation and host of the annual LPGA Tour— sidewalk slabs across the course were both sinking and lifting, creating a patchwork of uneven concrete slabs. These uneven surfaces created trip hazards for golfers and threatened accessibility, as well as degraded the aesthetic of the beautiful course. The project posed unique challenges: the affected sidewalk spanned 1,800 square feet across all 18 holes with 35 different areas of concern, and the trees on the course were protected.

Solution

JACKCRETE of Virginia was brought in to resolve the slab issues without replacing any concrete or disturbing any of the protected trees. Using NCFI Geotechnical‘s Terrathane 24-010 polyurethane, the team deployed two rigs to navigate the course and systematically address the sunken and lifted slabs. For slabs lifted by tree roots, JACKCRETE of Virginia raised adjacent sections to match the elevations of the “king slab” (tallest slab), eliminating trip hazards while preserving the protected trees. Rig coordination required precise planning due to the layout of the course, but the crew successfully reached even the hard-to-access areas, including the 18th hole.

Results

In a single day JACKCRETE of Virginia restored all sunken or lifted sidewalk slabs to grade, resolving trip hazards and bringing the walkway into ADA compliance. The course remained open throughout the project, and the use of minimally invasive polyurethane injection meant no heavy equipment was needed, preserving both the landscaping and the integrity of the course. All the trees from eras past were preserved, maintaining the beauty of this historic site. This efficient, non-disruptive approach allowed for maximum operational continuity. Even during the off-season with golfers still on site, the crew was able to reach the hard to access areas, finishing all their work without any disruption to the facility or to the golfers.
