Houston WWTP Manhole Sealing and Void Fill with Superior Grouting

Problem:

At a Houston Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), there was a manhole that led out to a water channel. During Hurricane Harvey, storm surge washed away the support soils and asphalt surrounding the manhole. The massive amount of soil that was lost could be a detriment if left unchecked, potentially allowing the manhole to crack, leak, experience inflow and infiltration, or other damage. To mitigate further damage to the manhole and surrounding structures, Superior Grouting was contacted to provide a manhole sealing service.

Solution:

In an attempt to fill the voids and concrete around the manhole, Superior Grouting filled the zone with cellular concrete. After they started pouring cellular concrete, Superior Grouting noticed the concrete seamed to be draining into infiltration points in the manhole. Because Superior Grouting offers a suite of solutions for geotechnical problems, they knew that the next best solution to seal the manhole was polyurethane injection. Using NCFI-4RH (previously known as 24-003), the team injected polyurethane into the loose joints and infiltration points in the manhole. This polyurethane expanded and sealed the manhole so that the team could move forward with pouring cellular concrete to fill the rest of the void spaces.

Results:

This project was completed in just three days. The injections of dual-component polyurethane successfully sealed the voids surrounding the manhole, stabilizing the structure and preventing further soil loss. By filling the void spaces and creating a barrier around the damaged area, the polyurethane stopped the uncontrolled flow that had previously allowed cellular concrete to flow in. With the polyurethane acting as a stabilizing and sealing layer, the cellular concrete remained contained within the repair zone and could properly fill the remaining spaces around the structure. The combination of polyurethane injection and cellular concrete allowed the team to restore support to the manhole and surrounding soils while mitigating the risk of further structural deterioration. By stabilizing the area and preventing continued soil loss, the repair helped protect the manhole from cracking, leakage, and future inflow and infiltration issues within the wastewater system.
